Top Comment: the part where she orders her pizza through her computer was like science fiction at the time. After the movie, that's all my family and I could talk about!
REVIEW: The Net (1995)
Main Post:
making my way through dozens of DVDs I have not yet seen, and reviewing as many as I can. This film, however, is one of my personal favourites, and I’m going to try and give a non biased review
CAST:
- Sandra Bullock as Angela Bennett
- Jeremy Northam as Jack Devlin
- Dennis Miller as Doctor Alan Champion
- Wendy Gazelle as Ruth Marx/fake Angela
CHARACTERS:
Angela Bennett is a computer analyst. She spends much of her online - so much that her own neighbours don’t even recognise her. She is intelligent, with long brown hair.
Jack Devlin is suave and charming, while also manipulating and murderous. He will go to any lengths to get what he wants. He is able to navigate computer programs easily.
Doctor Alan Champion is a psychiatrist, and Angela’s ex lover. He is older than Angela by several years, and has thick facial hair. He is slightly overweight. He cares for Angela, and does his best to help her.
Ruth Marx is sly and conniving. She slips into Angela’s identity easily. She wears her dark hair just below the nape of her neck. She is an expert in computers.
PLOT:
Computer analyst Angela Bennett learns that a software company is selling businesses a corrupt security program named Gatekeeper. The creator of the program, Jeff Gregg, deliberately hacks into the security systems of multiple businesses, then offers to sell the business Gatekeeper, claiming it is a safe and secure security program. Gatekeeper, however, is a type of Trojan horse, allowing Jeff Greg backdoor access into the business mainframe.
Under Secretary of Defence Michael Bergstrom commits suicide upon believing he has HIV, but this is a false diagnosis - his medical records had been altered. Bergstrom was a vocal opponent of the Gatekeeper program.
Angela meets Jack Devlin on a beach one afternoon, and, after being invited onto Jack’s boat, has sex with him. Later, she finds his gun. When questioned about it, Devlin attempts to murder Angela, who is able to escape in an inflatable boat. When the boat crashes, however, Angela is unconscious for several days.
Following this, she discovers that her identity has been erased, and her ‘new’ identity is Ruth Marx, who has multiple charges against her name - all entered into the police database by Devlin.
Angela calls ex lover Alan Champion for help, but he is murdered in hospital after his medical records were altered.
Angela discovers that a group of cyber terrorists known as Pretoria are responsible for hacking the computer systems of so many.
After being arrested for driving a stolen vehicle, Devlin, who is contract killer for Pretoria, again pursues Angela, who manages to escape his clutches yet again.
Angela hurries to a computer convention, where she uses an unoccupied computer to upload the evidence of Gatekeepers true intention, and how it links to Jeff Gregg, and sends the files to the FBI before she is discovered by Devlin and Ruth. She is pursued by both, but Angela kills Devlin with a fire extinguisher, after he has mistakenly shot Ruth, thinking she was Angela.
Angela returns home with her identity now intact, and as the conspiracy has been uncovered, watches television as Jeff Gregg is arrested by the FBI.
OPINION:
The first thing you notice about The Net is the dated computers used. Yes, this is what we had to work with in 1995, but it still amazes today, considering how far we’ve come. Dial up Internet - didn’t we all hate that? I know I did.
I love the premise of this film - a corrupt software program that enables you to completely erase, or alter the identities of practically anyone. Just the thought of this happening to me gives me chills, especially when we consider how much of our lives we share online.
I thought Jeremy Northam and Wendy Gazelle played their roles well. Northam played the conniving Devlin perfectly, and Gazelle’s portrayal of Ruth Marx was interesting - in the sense that I didn’t need to hear her voice to know how dangerous she was. Her face gave off her cold and calculating demeanour without her even saying a single word.
Sandra Bullock was perfect in this role. While The Net was one of the first films she’d been a part of, she nailed it. There’s a reason why Bullock is considered one of the best actresses in Hollywood, and The Net definitely showcases Bullocks’ acting ability.
Ive heard that there is a sequel to this film, called The Net 2.0. I haven’t seen it, but I do know it went direct to video, which is never a good sign.
The Net is one of those films that could be remade, as computer technology has advanced so much since 1995. Perhaps one of Tinseltown’s well known directors would be prepared to take on the challenge? We’ll have to wait and see.
I rate this film 3.5/5

All of a sudden, AdBlocker doesnt work on this site...Netmovies is the only good one i had found which updates quickly and all. anyone know the Solution? or something
Top Comment: Switch to FireFox + uBlock, it should work there. You could also try other alternatives like fmovies, xmovies8, 123movies. Most of these are usually mirrors, so stay safe, don't open random links, and do not download anything.
